Frederik Willem de Klerk , fodd 1936, sydafrikansk politiker och jurist, president 1989 - 94, andre vicepresident 1994 - 96. Frederik Willem de Klerk, som representerar Nationalistpartiet, engagerade sig tidigt i politiken. Som president foresprakade han kontakter med grannstaterna, tillat fredliga utomparlamentariska massmten, inledde underhandlingar med partier som representerade den svarta befolkningen, avskaffade apartheidlagarna och frigav politiska fangar. Frederik Willem de Klerk bidrog igenom verksamt till att hava den internationella isoleringen av Sydafrika. Hans reformer mottes med misstanksamhet av konservativa vita och med luttrad misstro av radikala svarta. Efter valet 1994 utsogs Frederik Willem de Klerk till andre vicepresident, och Nationalistpartiet ingick i Nelson Mandelas samlingsregering. I maj 1996 antog Sydafrika en ny forfattning. Efter det valde Frederik Willem de Klerk och Nationalistpartiet att lamna regeringssamarbetet och verka som oppositionsparti. Frederik Willem de Klerk tilldelades tillsammans med Mandela Nobels fredspris 1993.
